This wakizashi is a rare collaboration between Moriie [盛家] and Sukezane [助真] in the Shimada, Suruga province . According to the book of Nihonto-meikan [日本刀名鑑], Sukezane dates back to the Eisho period(1504-1521), but Moriie is not mentioned in Shimada. The Moriie on the omote-side is of a higher rank swordsmith than the Sukezane on the reverse, and swordsmiths during the Muromachi period used the character of the "Mori [盛]" were rare. This raises endless interest about whether this was a collaboration between the two swordsmiths, perhaps in response to exchanges with other countries or a demand from the Sengoku-daimyo Imagawa clan. It passed the Hozon Token shinsa in 2005. It comes with a wakizashi koshirae/mountings of a black lacquer Sendan-kizami/engraving saya. |
