| This sword was made by Suketoshi, resident of Kurume in Chikugo Province.Suketoshi was a Kurume Domain smith active from the late Bakumatsu period through the early Meiji era, and a disciple of Yokoyama Kaga no Suke Suketoshi of the Bizen tradition. He served Arima Yorinaga, the tenth lord of the Kurume Domain, who is remembered as an able and enlightened ruler.Although comparatively little known today, Suketoshi was one of the representative swordsmiths of Chikugo Province in the late Edo period. Because of the Haitōrei (Sword Abolishment Edict), his career was limited to a single generation; nevertheless, he earned a notable reputation during his lifetime. This work displays a dignified hon-zukuri form. The forging shows a fine ko-itame jihada, and the hamon is a chū-suguha, retaining traces of the original cutting edge (ubu-ha). Both the jigane and hamon are well preserved and healthy. On the backside of nakago has an inscription dated a day in the second month of Meiji 3 (1870), together with the word “Junkoku”, meaning “to give one’s life for the nation.” This inscription reflects the spirit of loyalist (sonnō / kinno) ideology prevailing at the time. This sword was designated Hozon Tōken in 1988. |
