Other Info
Sunshū Fujiwara Sadayoshi was a swordsmith of Suruga Province in the mid Edo period who also signed “Sunshū Tone-jū Fujiwara Yoshisada.” There were two generations: the first around the Genroku era and the second around the Kyōhō era.Because of the unusually wide mihaba and thick kasane of this wakizashi, it may be considered a “rikishi-zashi.” A rikishi-zashi is the common term for a type of wakizashi carried by sumo wrestlers during the Edo period. These blades are characterized by a relatively short length, wide mihaba, shallow sori, and a bold, powerful appearance. Compared with ordinary wakizashi, they are more robust and rugged in construction so that they would not appear small when worn by the large physiques of sumo wrestlers. Many examples are medium-length wakizashi with a blade length of about 1 shaku 3 sun to 1 shaku 8 sun (approximately 40–54.5 cm), giving a strong and weighty impression.Although sumo wrestlers were technically townsmen in status during the Edo period, they were exceptionally permitted to wear these rikishi-zashi while walking about the town. This is a special-order wakizashi fitted with an iron habaki. Passed NBTHK Hozon Tōken shinsa in 2024.
